How to format a book for KDP paperback

  1. Finish your manuscript in Word (or export a PDF or Markdown). Use headings for chapters; Printii finds them.
  2. Upload it to Printii and choose the KDP trim size you will publish at, for example 6 × 9 in for most novels and non-fiction or 5 × 8 in for a compact novel.
  3. Let the AI lay it out. Chapter openers, running heads, page numbers, margins and pictures are set for print in minutes.
  4. Check and adjust. Ask for changes in plain words or change any detail by hand. Every word stays exactly as you wrote it.
  5. Export the PDF and upload it as your KDP paperback interior. Use the same trim size in KDP’s setup.

Why not pay a formatter?

Formatting services in India usually charge ₹20–110 a page, so a 300-page novel costs thousands of rupees, and freelance designers abroad charge hundreds of dollars. Either way you wait one to four weeks, and every correction goes back in the queue. With Printii one book costs ₹1,499 or $19, once, it’s ready in minutes, and you can correct it yourself whenever you like. See the comparison.

KDP questions

Which KDP trim sizes does Printii support?

5 × 8 in, 5.5 × 8.5 in, 6 × 9 in and 6.14 × 9.21 in, which cover most KDP paperbacks, plus A5 and A4. You can change the size later and the whole book is laid out again.

Does the PDF pass KDP’s checks?

Printii exports PDF/X-4 with every font embedded and checks each page for text that doesn’t fit before you download. Preview the file in KDP’s previewer as usual before you publish.

What about margins and the gutter?

Margins are set for the page size, with a wider inside margin so text doesn’t disappear into the spine. You can adjust them in the Design panel.

Can I do the ebook too?

Printii makes print interiors. For the Kindle ebook, upload your original Word file to KDP.
